In “A Farewell to Flesh”, Kim Vose Jones brings with her work a statement about sexuality. It’s a statement that promotes sexuality as being a pure, innocent, and natural act that sometimes has a dirty name put to it. She expresses her statement through the use of very simple materials that are organized in a very complex, elegant and tasteful way. Her work is aesthetically pleasing and carries a very valuable message.
Kim’s choice of materials runs parallel with the concept that she is pushing in her work. Simple and basic. “When I’m looking for material, I’ll go to Canadian Tire.” She uses things like driveway salt, glass, fabrics, plastic pipes, pillows, bags, etc. As well as using simple materials, she uses simple colors. Her color scheme directly relates to theme of her work, as she only uses white. White is a color that in North American culture traditional represents purity and cleanliness. When you approach her work you almost immediately feel as if you are in a sterile environment.
The way that Kim Vose Jones organizes her work is what is what really pushes her theme. All of the materials are organized in manner that suggests different aspects of sexuality. There are many shapes that represent and look like male and female genitalia. There are shapes that seem to also represent sperm and egg cells. The salt that was poured everywhere seems to be in reference to the salty liquids of the reproductive system. One would think that walking into a room packed full of reproductive organs would make them feel uncomfortable. But, surprisingly, there is a strong feeling of innocence that invades the room, almost as if you were to walk into a room full of babies.
The message that Kim Vose Jones is trying to bridge is not one that is provocative or scandalous. She is bringing things back to the basics. Sometimes there is the connotation put on sexuality as being a sinful and treacherous act. But Kim Vose Jones denies that in her work. She brings us a very ancient and simple truth about sexuality and about nature. Sexuality is very pure, very innocent, and is how we humans are still around.
“A Farewell to Flesh” is an exhibit that speaks a valuable truth about sexuality and accentuates it as one of the most important aspects of humanity. Her work is extremely pleasing to the eye and provokes strong emotions like feelings of purity and cleanliness. The materials she uses ingeniously reflects the simplicity of her message. Through her work, Kim Vose Jones has created a very successful depiction of the truth about sexuality and serves as a reminder to those who’s thoughts have been twisted to think otherwise.
